On Ice
Volunteer coaches conduct clinics that teach the children
skating, stick-handling, rules, positions and teamwork as well as many other aspects of the
game of ice hockey. Participants benefit from weekly ice sessions in which coaches stress responsibility, discipline, character development and
teamwork.
Lasker Rink
IHIH currently has programming at Lasker Rink three nights per week.
Participants spend a minimum of one and a half hours on ice each week.
Nights are broken down into divisions, based primarily on age.
Participants aged eight to eleven work with volunteer coaches on the
basics skills of the games, eventually playing in scrimmages to begin
learning game experience. This year the Squirt, Pee-wee and Bantam teams will play in the Lasker Cup. Four to seven year old participants, the Hockey
Pups, focus on learning to skate programs.
Chelsea Piers
IHIH funds the Midget Senior Rangers, ages 15 through 17, team that competes in the House League at Chelsea Piers. This provides a more competitive hockey environment. Come on down to Sky Rink and cheer for the Harlem Rangers.
In the Classroom
Education is the Goal!" is our motto. That credo is emphasized by the educational component of the IHIH program. Students must attend a weekly one-hour class throughout the year. During the clinic portion we use a 23-week curriculum to teach the fundamentals of the sport of ice hockey. Some of the lessons cover Responsibility, Hockey Rules, History of the National Hockey League and more. While hockey "is the hook," we incorporate activities that include reading, writing, arts and crafts, discussion and games.
Our volunteer teachers facilitate the lesson and offer guidance, assistance and serve as a role model that the children look up to.
The education program continues to evolve as a vital and dynamic part of the overall Ice Hockey In Harlem program. With the sport of Ice Hockey as the “hook” weekly classroom sessions include:
· A curriculum that uses ice hockey as a way to explore other academic subjects
· Guest Speaker program
· Academic Skills Competition
· Student Athlete of the Month Program

New
York Rangers
Alumni Scholarship Fund
Rangers donate time & funds to
effort
In February 2004, the New York Rangers announced a scholarship fund
providing deserving Ice Hockey In Harlem participants with funding to
local private and parochial schools. As a result, five
participants received assistance for educational funding. Participants are
carefully selected and their progress monitored to ensure a
positive experience.
Summer Hockey Camp Scholarships
Motivated participants are rewarded with the opportunity to attend summer hockey camp. These camps are located primarily in Canada and Northeastern United States. This is an opportunity for participants to gain valuable cultural and social experiences outside New York City.
Community Service Projects
Participants are required to complete community service projects in an effort to promote teamwork and a sense of giving back to the community. Projects include working with children with disabilities, assisting in Salvation Army Food Distribution and IHIH projects.
