Chris Hontvet
NEW YORK, NY.--- When he moved to New York City in 2003, volunteer Chris Hontvet began looking for a way to give back to the community. Considering Chris’ parents first put him on skates at two years of age, Ice Hockey In Harlem was a perfect match.
Chris started with the Mite team when he began volunteering with IHIH in the fall of 2004 and has spent the last two years coaching the Bantam and Midget teams. While he has certainly enjoyed his time on the ice as a volunteer coach, it his latest project for which he is most proud.
“I wanted to do something more,” said Hontvet of the IHIH-Elite Hockey Camp Scholarship that he and Patti Crowe, Executive Director of Elite Hockey Camps, have started. “I grew up in northern MN and had the luxury of playing hockey whenever I wanted. The best part, though, is that ice time was free. Patti and I want to be able to give something more to these kids, something more than just ice time in the winter.”
As many Dartmouth players do during their undergraduate years, Chris worked as a camp counselor at some of Crowe’s camps at Dartmouth and Norwich, VT. Having experienced life in the big city and in rural New Hampshire and Vermont, he thought Elite was an excellent fit. Their goal is to build an endowment that will provide funding for two IHIH participants to attend Elite for two weeks of camp each summer at Norwich University in Vermont.
“It gives the kids a chance to get out of the city during the summer,” he noted. “They will not only get top notch hockey instruction, they will also spend two weeks in beautiful Vermont. It also gives them an opportunity to meet other kids from different areas throughout the country.”
Of the scholarship’s success, Chris mentioned that they are off to a great start. “We don’t want this to be a one-time shot. We want to provide a scholarship for at least two kids each summer for many years to come. So far, we’ve blown through our goal of raising $5,000, and I think we can raise a lot more.”
